THEY HELPED BUILD NEW CHINA:
Early Contributions by Foreign Friends to Building of New China
Hear about the lives and work of
Jayme Martins – Brazilian
Jayme Martins, a Brazilian journalist, came to China in 1962 to help New China improve its Portuguese language radio programming at China Radio International (CRI). When his Chinese colleagues realized that he had left his fiancée, Angelina, in Brazil, they invited her to join him in Beijing as well. While on holiday in Brazil in 1964, a military coup took place, and because Jayme had been working in China, he was promptly imprisoned as a suspected communist. A year later, he was released on parole, and the young couple resolved to flee the country. They returned to China with their newborn daughter, Raquel, and began what would become 15 years of life in exile.
Angelina Martins – Brazilian
During her 15 years in China she worked for China Radio International doing news broadcasting. In the 1970’s she worked as a teacher of the Portuguese language at BFSU. Angelina returned to Brazil in 1990. Having developed a love of both the Chinese people and their culture, she visits China every few years.
Presented by their daughter
Raquel Martins -- Brazilian
Educated in Chinese schools until the age of 15, she returned to Brazil with her parents when they were issued Brazilian passports. In 1987, she was awarded a scholarship by the Brazilian government to study Contemporary Chinese Literature at PKU. Studying there, she met her husband-to-be, Matti, a native of Finland who shared her passion for China. Their three children have grown up in China, and the family has had the privilege of bearing witness to the massive changes and rapid development in the country.
